As I wind down my stories from NZ, here’s another little example of a group of nature-conscious people (this time DOC, the national Department of Conservation) calling on passing tourists for a wee bit of help, if they don’t mind. If they do, they can just keep right on walking and nobody will know any different!
I was staying at Tongariro National Park Village, planning to walk the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing... but unfortunately, the weather forecast for the high mountains was so bad that the shuttle bus (to the start of the walk) was cancelled. No chance of walking to the start myself, as it’s 26km away. So I resigned myself to the fact that I couldn't do "The Crossing" until tomorrow, and decided to head out on a different local walk: the Fisher’s Track, starting in the village. |
